McAfee was found dead just hours after a national court approved a United States request to extradite him on charges of criminal tax evasion. According to El País, he was found hanging in his cell and officers treated his death as a suicide.
Prison officials reportedly intervened and tried to save McAfee, but were ultimately unsuccessful. The Justice Department said they found no evidence of any criminal activity related to McAfee’s death.
McAfee, faces charges that carry a maximum prison sentence of 30 years in the United States. Some of the accusations against McAfee stem from the alleged sale of around $2 million of cryptocurrency which he promoted on Twitter to raise prices.
McAfee and his bodyguard Jimmy Gale Watson Jr are suspected of buying crypto, before massively promoting it on social media. Then it will then “pump and dump” the coins as soon as the price rises enough. An additional $11 million was allegedly paid to startups for helping promote certain cryptocurrencies. Meanwhile, no information was disclosed to investors.
McAfee also faces charges of tax evasion after he removed income from his taxes for promoting cryptocurrency, preaching and selling his life story.
McAfee rose to prominence after debuting its antivirus software in the 1980s. That, along with his behind-the-scenes adventures after making his fortune, made him a well-known figure in the fields of technology and finance.
